Synopsis
Or so everyone believes.
When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her… for a price. Love isn't meant to be part of the bargain.
Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.
Review
A Rumpelstiltskin retelling written by retelling Queen Marissa Meyer with her classic flair for juicy drama and writing style that captures you inside its magic. **Cue Happy Dance**
I enjoyed this book so much. I ended up starting it one day and staying up late the next night to finish it because I just couldn't wait another day to find out how it ended. Who needs sleep when you're hopelessly lost inside a story with suspence, magic, thrills and secrets anyways?
As expected, the writing is amazing. The pacing is perfect. It was fast paced even when very little was happening. Every piece of the story was important. There was no word vomit or filler.
I adored Serilda as a main character. I just loved her spunk and her spirit. The side characters were so well done. Each character had an important part in the story no matter how small it was. I loved that we don't get weighed down with a huge mess of characters but rather get to focus on a select few. It allows us to really appreciate each one of them as individuals.
Please tell me this is a series. I really hope this is a series. It feels like it should be a series. I need more from this story, these characters, this world! I just need more. Like soon, please!
